Placed into foster care in my very early years, I was shunted between four foster homes and a residential care home across South East London, all before the age of 18.
I was also given a council flat and struggled with the stark independence and isolation that came at 18.
It was in my early 20s that I made my own decision to access my records.
I had burning questions.
Why was I placed into care?
Why hadn't I ever met my birth father?
Why did certain foster carers let me go?
Soon enough, I had the files in front of me.
The process of getting them was exhausting and reading them, re-traumatising.
I shared some of that journey on the radio and spoke about how important files can be to young people leaving care.
And then following my radio appearance, Nkechi, that charismatic actor I'd interviewed, DM'd me.

So by the time I'm sitting in the studio with Nkechi in early 2026, getting her files feels monumental, like it's essential to her happiness.
But is it always better to know the truth?
