And then there was this bad food at home.
Then I went out.
It was bloody freezing.
And all the bark in the tree was raw.
And I felt this was me, that the tree would never have a spring.
I would never have a spring.
And it was this kind of,
And I was so lost and I yearned for home.
And I realized that the one thing I could do to change things, I couldn't even talk to my parents because it's no internet, no mobile, nothing.
And I realized that I had to cook because everything.
in the aromas in that kitchen, I would have felt the presence of my mother because I would have felt she'd come next to me.
And it was, food became then not something I ate, but it became everything, my identity, my culture, my religion, my everything, my name.
And so I came to start cooking, not out of a sense of, sorry, my mom is wonderful, but I realize how lucky I am.
Every day she lives there and she cooks for me.
And now she's kind of not remembering things too well, but she still manages to cook for me.
It's a privilege and an honor.
But 30 odd years ago, I cooked.
And I felt, as the aromas of the spices and everything, that I was connecting not just to my mother, but to my ancestors, to the matriarchs who had gone.
I was now connected through food.
So for me, food is not about, you know... Yes, I love eating and I enjoy cooking.
