Tina Powers is in her 60s.
She has a morbid sense of humor and a saleswoman's charm.
She'd had a long career, even run her own real estate brokerage.
But by the spring of 2022, she was looking for work.
One day in March, she saw a posting online.
$25 an hour, to be exact, for an assistant position at a real estate investment firm called UDAO Management.
When Tina arrived for the interview, she was surprised to find herself not in a commercial district, but on a quiet residential street, standing before the double doors of a palatial home.
Inside, the rooms on the first floor were set up as offices, with leather-rolling chairs and clusters of desks topped with computer screens.
A laminated list of workers' rights was pasted on one of the walls.
Tina was led upstairs to a room that looked like a security guard station.

And seated before them was the real estate company's owner, Guojun Xuan.
He was dressed smartly, in a collared shirt and slacks.
But he gave off a bracing odor, as though he'd already knocked back a few.
And that's how Tina started working inside the Arcadia mansion and parking her car on Johnny Street.
Tina's job was to take calls for Guojun's second-in-command, a thin woman with a distracted, impatient demeanor who spoke limited English.
This was Sylvia Zhang.
A lot of the properties owned by Udall Management were bought at foreclosure auctions, according to Tina.
