Any living person has to be able to outrun it.
But it has to make up for it by being strong and gross-looking.
The ghoulish zombie with rotting teeth kills John by throwing him onto the ground as his head hits a gravestone.
Then he chases Barbara into the car.
She locks it.
And the zombie, inexpertly, pounds on the door and windows, trying to get in.
The second rule is that the zombie has to be dumb.
It has to have one very simple desire and walks in one direction, destroying barriers to fulfill it.
If a zombie has a mind, it only has a single track.
Which makes the next thing that happens particularly interesting.
Maybe even a flaw in George Romero's early depiction.
