And it's a really extraordinary literary feat and literary effort.

And I'm just so wowed by the kind of

Not just experimentation for experimentation's sake, but someone who's written something that has such ambition and such form and such like brio to it, and it's really extraordinary.

So mine.

I was thinking what would go really well alongside it, and that idea of extractive parables.

And it made me think of Kate Grenville's Dark Places, that very early Grenville, which is about a kind of entitled, rural, acquisitive gent who's part buffoon and all monster.

I think he's a wonderful read.

And that's another one of those stories which

Love because the character is sort of entirely cruel and awful, and you loathe him.

And yet there's that tiny gold seam of human sympathy that runs through him that dares you to watch what he does and find yourself in his awfulness.

So, yeah, it's one of my favorite of Kate Grenville's novels.

It's one of the novels that cracked open for me.

How

How much bigger and crueler and darker Australian fiction was than I had given it credit for.

So those two together I think would make a wonderful set of bookins.

But they don't need to be read together.

You can't underestimate readers, but you really can't underestimate children readers.

Like they're the most discerning readers of all.
