But her new novel, it's called The Water Takes, and it's set in an Australian city.
Well, sort of in a suburbia, really.
And there's this woman called Pam who's in her 70s.
She lives alone.
Her partner's died.
She's really sort of sharp and funny and a bit fierce.
And she's noticed that her backyard is getting swampy
and wet and there's a girl, a 10-year-old girl who lives next door who she looks after sometimes and then holes appear in the footpath.
There are sinkholes and then entire houses fall in.
It becomes almost a version of the road or a bit like that bit in John Wyndham's Day of the Triffids when people are having to make their way in the world, find food and
travel across a landscape.
And it's very Australian and familiar and sort of flooded.
And I thought, gee, this is compelling.
It's funny.
There are also, you know, bleak moments, but not as bleak as the road.
And so I was really drawn into this book and thinking about, you know, climate fiction and what it does.
You know how you enter into a book in terms of the rules of that world?
And so if they tell you it's a flooded landscape, I believe it's a flooded landscape.
And then something happened right at the end and I thought, oh...
Maybe I'm reading a different book.
