So we have that sense of weaponised, politicised nostalgia sort of boiling away.

And she finds herself a job in this old 1930s attraction that's being reanimated of The Starving Bride, which is a woman in a wedding dress locked into a glass box in a room for 40 days and 40 nights.

And as she wastes away, the room is prowled by a live lion.

And people can come and watch this woman who can't get out of the box because around her prowls this

also saying all the horrible things that are already in your own head about your own body because her body's being watched.

So it's like that inner monologue you have about all the flaws that you know that you can see and all of the people coming past are pointing out, you know, her double chin, her flappy arms, they point it all out.

And so it's that horrible idea of the deepest insecurities you have being voiced by like this Greek chorus of surveillance and tourists.

so that sort of happening...

So even though she's allowed out at night to eat, will she?

Yes, there are people ignoring warning signs of catastrophe.

They're being told that if you don't take urgent action, the whole edifice might fall and they're too busy investigating

sort of reanimating the past and getting different quotes from getting different people and getting the cheapest possible tender to do that work.

And so the counsellors are sort of bureaucratically fiddling while the jetty is crumbling and the woman is wasting away, but the lion is getting strangely sleeker and more bold.

This is a capital A allegory.

It's a beast that can carry a lot of different ways of thinking about hunger as desire, as obliteration, as fury,

So you're quite right that this sort of sits in a literary tradition that's old.

And I found myself writing in the margins a lot, all of the books that this reminded me of.

I don't know if you did the same thing, Kate, but I was reminded of lots of books that I love.
