And especially being a young girl growing up in the cult, my rights were even like more limited, I guess, and my opportunities.
And no one once ever asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up or what I liked or didn't like.
No one cared because my role was to...
be an obedient daughter and then become an obedient wife.
And when I finally asked my parents... So being homeschooled had nothing to do with the cult.
It had more to do with my parents.
Most of the other kids did actually go to school.
But I begged my parents to let me go to school when I was 10 because I just wanted to have friends.
And I felt like...
That was my shot, I think, at having a little sort of access to the outside world, you know.
But yet I finished school at 16 because why would I need to go on and have a further education?
Because I was just a girl.
I didn't need to be educated because my role was just to be a wife and to have children, which there's nothing inherently wrong with either of those things, of course.
But when you're told that's all you can be and all you can do, I knew I wanted so much more from my life than that.
Not really.
My brother who was two years older than me was incredibly gifted and he actually did go to school I think for like kindergarten and maybe grade one and he was already far ahead of the other kids in his grade, just super talented, could play multiple instruments you know when he was a teenager, learnt multiple languages, that kind of thing.
and my mum wanted the teachers to put him up a grade and they refused.
And so she was like, well, I can do it better myself.
And that was very typical of my mum, where she was very strong-minded and had strong opinions about things and did feel that her way was the right way.
And so by the time I was old enough to go to school, there was no option given to me.
