And I had little moments of that, I guess, with the other kids at church, but nothing that was like –
a super pervasive part of like my childhood where it felt like, yeah, I've got my little girl group and I've got my, you know, I missed out on, I bawled my eyes out during the Barbie movie because I was like, this was girlhood, like this is what I missed out on, you know, like I'd never, sometimes there's so many moments now as an adult where I have it really like put in my face and what I've missed out on because I don't know until I see it and then I'm like, oh, that's what I could add.
Again, I think because when I started writing this book, it wasn't to be published.
Like this was me waking up one day realizing that I had no one left in my life to co-remember my life.
And so I was like, if I don't write all this down, I'm going to forget all these things.
And obviously that's not something I want to necessarily remember, but I think it just sort of came through that process of like pulling my story and my history out of myself.
And it was also super cathartic.
Yes, it was awful to write.
And there were moments when I was writing it where I was like, oh, that's what that was.
Like that wasn't okay because we just grew up and punishing and hitting children was so justified.
And it was, you know, there was a scripture they used to always quote, which was train up a child in the way he should go.
And when he's old, he will not depart from it.
And that was what they always used to justify hitting children.
And so the more you hit children, the more you were kind of guaranteeing their place in heaven.
Yeah.
And it was so arbitrary.
Like I know on the Wednesday night when I was younger, we would have to like lie our sleeping bags out in like the, you know, room next to where the adults would meet for the service.
And even if you just sort of rustled too much or you're moving or you sort of were whispering to the kid next to you, like it was very often that what we would call like the sister or the woman who was taking care of us would come over and hit you for just being a kid.
At home, it was super arbitrary.
Like, I don't think there's ever any justification for hitting children, obviously.
