And yes, it's pretty wild that although the first clues we got about dark matter came from astronomy, from looking out into space, the answers, maybe with luck, will come from experiments performed deep underground.
How peculiar.
Bunker has been on the hunt for dark matter for some 30 years.
That's a long time to be looking for something that science, so far, hasn't been able to pin down at all.
And yet our best theories really do predict that dark matter is real, and that it's out there.
So where is it?
And what is it?
So I've been doing this since the late 90s, so approaching three decades now in this game.
It was right around the corner.
We thought it was a WIMP, and we were about to detect it.
That didn't happen.
We didn't detect it with the previous generation of experiments, and so we had to rethink things.
The theorists also rethought things.
And they thought, okay, maybe it's not the WIMP.
And as they did that, they expanded the hunting ground dramatically.
But if not in your lifetime, you do feel this is something that scientists are going to pin down eventually?
Does that have an element of tragedy to it?
And so the search goes on.
And for scientists like Bunker, all of that time spent writing in the cage and scrubbing oneself clean beyond all measure and adjusting knobs and dials and staring at computer monitors waiting to see a blip on the screen that might come any day or not, well, it's obvious that he loves it and he wouldn't have it any other way.
