Can you just explain what you did and what you found?
Sure.
And these are T cells in general, not gluten-specific T cells, because of course, people without celiac disease don't have them.
They sort of lost their momentum a little bit over time.
When you say lost momentum, you know, you sort of think about disorders like celiac disease as the immune system is overactive.
But what you found is perhaps the T cells faded?
Do we see these T-cell, these sluggish T-cells in other autoimmune diseases?
Right.
So this work might one day help clinicians identify people at higher risk of developing celiac disease.
But what about people who already have a diagnosis?
Are there treatment options on the horizon?
Could people with celiac disease one day walk into any old bakery, buy a croissant and bite into it without doing themselves any damage?
And I've heard there's work going into changing wheat itself so that celiacs can eat it too, right?
That was Professor Jason Tydin, Celiac Research Lab Head at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and Director of the Snow Centre for Immune Health.
We also heard from Dr Vanessa Bryant, who's a Lab Head also at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and Scientific Engagement and Collaboration Lead at the Snow Centre for Immune Health.
And while it might have been disappointing, I guess, to not see the effects they wanted, this really highlights the importance of reporting negative results, especially in trials.
We do see this bias towards, you know, positive results, things working, things having an effect, but we need to know the things that perhaps don't work.
On ABC Radio National, you're listening to The Health Report.
What's in the meal pack?
Oh boy, we have so much.
