There's now been some tax incentives to bring that cash back.
Yeah, absolutely.
People who are watching this space are really wondering whether we're going to see companies invest in things like capital expenditures and research and development, or whether we'll see that money go to shareholders in terms of buybacks and dividends.
Generally, history has shown when you have companies bringing a lot of cash back from overseas, that tends to go into buybacks.
In 2004, there's a tax repatriation holiday and you ended up seeing buyback surge around that period.
There's a lot of expectations that we're going to see some buybacks.
Well, JP Morgan is projecting $800 billion in buybacks this year, which would be a lot.
Last year, buybacks actually came down a bit, but they were at $530 billion.
So the idea being that they would bounce back a lot.
But we haven't seen that fully play out yet.
Generally, what you see with buybacks is that companies announce a buyback program, and then whether or not they execute on that buyback program remains to be seen.
Do they frequently walk them back after they've announced them?
Well, you tend to have an announcement that a certain amount of buybacks have been approved, but companies basically step in and do those on a sporadic basis.
And, you know, we don't really know until after the fact whether companies have executed.
You'll get that data later on.
But right now what we have is these announcements.
And there have certainly been a lot of announcements, a lot faster for this point in the year than in recent years.
And that's one sign that companies are definitely thinking about this.
And it seems to be something they want to do.
And then we'll kind of have to see how that plays out.
