Appearances
Katharina was born in Freiburg in Breisgau in Germany in 1961.
As we'll hear, she was remarkably attuned to the tangible and intangible visual effects of space and objects as a child.
She eventually went on to study at the Kunstakademy in Münster and then at the Kunstakademy in Dusseldorf, in Germany, in the 1980s, a period of intense focus on the purpose and place of painting, both in her homeland and
And internationally.
Even though she studied painting, she always looked beyond the rectangle of the canvas.
As early as 1982, she was placing paper forms among the branches of trees.
In the 1990s, she began to show her work widely.
Initially, her intensely colourful abstractions were made on canvas with a brush, but by 1995 she was exploring public space, creating brightly hued wall paintings around the staircase of the company Telecoms.

She first began to use the spray gun in 1998 in a landmark piece for the Kunstmuseum in Bern in Switzerland, which was untitled but is known as the Green Corner.
Using a dark green, she sprayed into the corner of the gallery, up onto the coving and the ceiling, and partway along adjacent walls.
The field of colour she made hovers in the space, evocative of the misty spray technique, but also creating a
Distinctive ethereal and uncontained space.
She followed this with similar clouds of colour in other museum spaces, including the Drawing Centre in New York that same year, where the deep green was surrounded by a halo of yellow, and the Cinnati Foundation in Martha in Texas in 1999, where she created an almost impressionist patchwork of hazy green, yellow, and reds.
This particular project called Cheese Gone Bad was revelatory for the first time.
For Caterina, since when she saw it at night, lit within the small building for which it was made, she said the painting was not only a wall painting, but a painting with a relationship to the whole building.
Ever since, every piece she makes seems to have a relationship with the entire surrounding environment, meaning its architectural structures but also the social and cultural activities of the space.
Katerina also trained her spray gun on the canvas, interspersing this new.
Technique with paintings made with the brush, while broadening colour relationships and exploring the myriad ways in which she could occupy space in her installations.
She stresses that these two elements, studio activity and projects in museums and public sites, are symbiotic in her practice.
