Let me be clear, I have never found RZA himself talking about Staten Island secession, but in my Kazabon mode, I see a connection.
Because as he walked a Staten Island that felt like it wasn't welcome in New York City and was striking out on its own, this guy who would have every reason not to feel welcome on Staten Island formed a plan for an unlikely hip-hop group from Shaolin that was about to do the same.
Maybe, he thought, they could skip the whole major label thing that had screwed him before.
Maybe he didn't have to sanitize his life and character to succeed.
Maybe there could be a hip-hop group from the Forgotten Borough that made it all happen on its own.
And that group would be called Wu-Tang Clan.
He began to assemble his crew.
