Putting eight MCs on a track and making it all blend together is as difficult as making five boroughs feel like one city.
The difference is that RZA was about to pull it off.
It took days of recording until all the verses were in place.
Like students at Shaolin and Wu-Tang, each MC was trying to one-up the other, pushing farther and farther beyond the reaches of what existed in hip-hop at the time.

The group took the cassette of Protect Ya Neck to the hottest hip-hop radio show in town, Stretch and Bebedo.

They shoved an unmarked record into his hands.
It was the premiere that launched the Wu-Tang Clan.
The entire philosophy of Wu-Tang is that they don't need some centralized music industry to take over the world.
They can do it all on their own.
Basically, you had your chance.
You lost it.
We don't need you.
It's our time now.
The song blew up.
So of course the labels came knocking, but this time RZA was ready.
