Well, he came years and years ago before I even started writing.

I think like a lot of, I was a journalist, like a lot of journalists and school teachers, I thought I would like to be a novelist.

It seemed a better career than working.

It really began like Star Wars with Hornblower because the guy who devised Star Wars sold it to the network by saying this is Hornblower in outer space.

And I loved Hornblower.

I must have begun reading Hornblower around the age of 15, 16, read all 11 books and then realized there were no more.

And this is horrible to happen when you like someone and suddenly there's no more adventures.

And the only recourse for me was to go and start reading the real histories about the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

And through those histories discovered the extraordinary achievements of Wellington and his army.

And I thought, well, there's got to be a series like Hornblower only on the Army.

So I began to haunt bookshops looking for that series.
