Yeah, I just want to put some numbers behind all of this.
You know, so far under these now illegal tariffs, the administration has collected one hundred and seventy five billion dollars.
Wow.
And if you do the math back of the envelope, there's a little bit over one hundred million households in the United States.
So that works out to about fifteen hundred dollars per household in the United States.
So this is not chump change.
A lot of this money, 90% of it, according to some studies, has been paid by U.S.
businesses who, in many cases, have passed along those higher costs to American consumers.
And we've seen it.
We've seen it at the grocery store where the cost of coffee and bananas and other products that we import have gone up thanks to these tariffs.
Well, now we don't know how the companies that have paid these tariffs are going to get their refunds.
If I were to guess, there's going to be a lengthy litigation process.
It's going to take months and months and months for any of these companies to get a single dollar back.
And then we all lived this experience through the pandemic in the Biden administration.
If the company that paid the tariff gets some money back from the government, how likely do you think it is that they're going to pass along that money in the form of lower prices to American consumers?
I think it's pretty unlikely.
OK, so that money, that $175 billion is basically gone forever in my mind.
Second thing to remember is that the president announced today, two hours after the Supreme Court opinion, that he's going to use another legal strategy to impose new tariffs in place of the ones that just got struck down.
And according to his Secretary of the Treasury earlier today, Scott Besson, his analysis is that these new tariffs are basically going to recreate the amount of tariffs that were in place before they were struck down.
And so we're really talking about replacing one set of tariffs that have been invalidated with another set of tariffs that are probably going to be pretty similar in size and scope.
