So...

basically we're in you know 2010s london this is the point where the uk in particular is still very much opening its doors as a butler economy some people call it to service the rich chinese and saudis and middle eastern people but also the russians there's a lot of money sloshing around london it definitely felt like boom time this is when i was very much

in the financial world in that period.

And I promise you, if you were in the nightclubs or restaurants, London just felt very boom time.

And you have a young boy called Zach Brettler.

He's growing up in North London in a very comfortable middle-class household.

So yeah, his parents would definitely be far.

Just the fact that you live in North London means that you're probably in the top 10% of wealth in the UK already.

His dad worked in financial services, a very good job, would have probably been on a high six-figure salary.

His mom was a journalist on the Financial Times newspaper on the How to Spend It magazine.

So very comfortable with the means to send their kids to private school.

So there's a big brother and then there's Zach.

the big brother gets into a very well not the most elite but probably in the top 20 private schools in england the top 10 in london known for its academic prowess i know people who've been to that school who go to that school it's a very good school unfortunately um to get into these private schools in england you have to sit an exam they are quite academically stringent

And they also test the character and personality, and are you going to kind of culturally fit?

And for whatever reasons, the little brother does not get into that school, which is seen as quite socially shaming.

And as someone who, I'm very much part of this milieu, the dinner party circuit, the parents would be being a bit sniffy about, oh, why didn't the little brother get in?

There is a presumption that the siblings will always get in, but they don't necessarily, right?

And so he ends up commuting to a different private school, which is definitely not as elite, definitely does not have the social cachet.

And he falls in with a crowd.

And maybe it's just a time it's in the ether where everything is incredibly flashy.
