But we didn't know that.

And so after a while, we climbed back up onto the island because the water was like 14 degrees or so, so pretty cold.

And there was a while when we didn't hear any gunshots, right?

So we were sitting on some rocks on the lakeside when, you know, again, someone in a police uniform came out of the woods and told us they had caught the bad guy.

But thankfully, that was the actual police.

Not really, right?

So I think both me and other survivors have described how difficult it was to actually trust the police at that point, right?

Because we had just had the experience of someone in a police uniform shooting at us.

So that was a challenge.

But he was somewhat understanding of that as well and told us that we could identify who was the real police by the fact that the real police were all wearing helmets while the shooter was not.

And so giving us a little bit of what we needed to know who to trust.

And they had to secure the island and...

Then they also coordinated the evacuation of people who had been wounded, which thankfully I had not, right?

And so we were there for a while.

I'm not sure.

I think over the last 15 years, I've certainly been able to recoup part of that.

But there's also parts of... It's a defining moment in my life, of course.

And that is so far away when you're 20 and in uni, right?

And I think it was...

Kind of a pretty brutal transition into recognizing that this happens and life is short.
