And that happens in both places because the absence of a single unifying identity creates this kind of canvas for a cacophony of offerings and properties.

And therefore it's also because they have such notoriety and a lot of people have had great pivotal moments

in both places at a certain time in their life.

What's a building that you wish you had designed?

I mean, I would have loved to have designed the Sydney Opera.

What do you love about it?

It's an opera house, right?

So it is a somewhat elitist institution, but it's made in such a way that it creates this man-made landscape of stairs that are fully accessible to the public, that you can actually circumnavigate the two pavilions that are the halls.

There's a concert hall and an opera hall.

And then on top of this incredibly generous public invitation, you have these pavilions that are like light and resting.

And they are evocative of Chinese pagodas, of Gothic vaults, of Mayan temples.

You're in favor of all that mashing up?

but they're not in any way a prestige of either of them.

They're just, because they somehow, they transcend any kind of cultural identity or bias.

And then also it has this underlying rigor that it's not just some kind of empty gesture because Utzon had this,

insistence on what he called the additive, that any kind of expression should be able to be made with industrialized repetitive elements.
