He laughed because we'd all jumped.
We yelled at him, and he stood there for maybe 15 seconds making fun of us before turning toward the house.
We watched him walk up the steps and onto the porch.
Then we turned back toward the field.
A few seconds later, I looked at the porch again.
It was empty.
My brother was gone.
So were my parents, my nephew, and my brother's girlfriend.
Even Oso, our dog, was nowhere in sight.
Where did everybody go?

Gray slowly raised his flashlight toward the field.

Something was standing in the grass.
It was hunched over, facing us.
The flashlight caught its face.
Pale skin, no hair, deep sunken eyes.
It looked almost human, except there was something wrong with its face.
The features looked too flat, too still.
