I don't think there was any intention at that point to sort of say, oh, I'm going to mow this down.
It's just he was walking there, and it just went in very quickly.
If it was intentional, he was pretty smart, pretty quick to do it.
But when he went in to sign the scorecard, they said, we want to review it.
They took him back out there.
They said, we think you improved your lie.
That's rule 8.1.
Uh, which you can't improve your lie.
And most of the times when you're improving your lie, it's usually something around the golf ball, but you can also get penalized for improving where your backswing is.
So, you know, in some cases, um, guys might break a branch down that, that their ball, their swing is being hindered by it.
he it was it was a pretty heated conversation they went back and forth for a good 10 12 minutes uh and then they whatever decided they went back into the scoring tent and they were in there for another probably 20 to 30 minutes and then finally they came out and uh the all of a sudden the uh the scoring terminals all flipped and Bryson went from seven under to five under and he sort of stormed by everybody and went right to the range where he's beating balls which is
usually his MO anyway.
I mean, if you're going to burn something off, this is a pretty good place to do it.
Just go out there and hit some balls off the range.
he's been kind of a guy who's played a lot most of his years on the uh pre-live on the dp world tour and and a sort of asia australia new zealand down in that area always been sort of regarded as a really good ball striker has played you know he's played his fair share on the pga tour as well but never as a regular player uh that i can recall um he said afterwards that by the he birdied the first three holes and at the third after he birdied the third he said okay i
I got a chance to shoot 62.
That's pretty optimistic when you've only played three, you've got 15 more holes to play.
And I would say, you talked about the missed putt on the last hole in 61, and that looked like it was all nerves to me.
I think he knew in his head what was at stake, and it could have been the lowest score in a major championship, all four major championships, let alone the Open.
And I think he just kind of got a little nervous and pulled it.
