John Denver's story starts long before people knew him as the guy singing about country roads and Rocky Mountain skies.
John Denver was born in nineteen forty three, and because his dad is in the Air Force, he grows up moving around in a lot of different places.
Music was the one steady thing in his life as a kid.
He gets a guitar at a young age and he starts writing early, the way a lot of folk singers do.
Learn the chords, play the rooms, and keep going until it turns into a job and then keep going after that.
Now in the early 60s, he leaves college and heads to Los Angeles, right into the folk club circuit.
Not long after that, he joins the Chad Mitchell trio in 1965, which is basically the first time he got paid real money.
I would say that's his entrance into the professional lane of music.
It's where he learns touring, it's where he learns how to hold a room with just a voice and a guitar.
Now before he was a household name as a singer, he was already making noise as a songwriter.
He wrote Cause I'm leaving on a jet plane for Peter Paul and Mary.
And they go on to record it.
It goes number one in nineteen sixty nine.
Also, his version of that song is awesome as well.
That's a big part of his career.
Like that was his first major commercial success.
Then his solo breakthrough hits in 1971 Take Me Home Country Roads, which climbs to number two on the Billboard Hot 100.
