Police discovered the body on August third hanging from a tree in the lot of an abandoned home.
They initially said they're classifying it as a death investigation and hadn't really said much since then until the city council meeting where they announced they were investigating it as a possible homicide.
The mother herself said she felt a bit stonewalled by police.
She told me yesterday she'd made multiple phone calls, left voicemails over the last two.
Weeks and hasn't heard back anything.
This morning, when I texted her, she said not a word.
So she's still just really looking for closure, wanting to know how her daughter died in total disbelief of a possibility of suicide, but that hasn't been suggested.
We just don't know.
One of the other things about this particular case is it is the third instance of a person found dead and hung from a tree in Mississippi in less than a year.
The other two happened in twenty four.
2025, on the exact same day, one white man, one black man, uh both considered a suicide, and the mother of one of those uh contests those findings.
So there's institutional distrust going on.
People are saying the slow drip of information just feeds that distrust, and they're worried: is this the beginning of a new horrifying trend?
And they want answers.
Looking at Mississippi's dark racial history and the lynchings that have occurred there.
There over the years, many years ago, fortunately, in this predominantly black town, where roughly 80% of the population is African American, people are worried.
Did race play a role in her death?
Was she killed?
These are all some of their worst suspicions that are born out of knowledge of that lived history by some of them.
And until they get answers from police, they just feel kind of stuck worrying the worst.
