So they had superior knowledge of the local terrain and they had a decentralized social hierarchy that made it hard to stop.

Fast forward a few years later, Mexico gets their independence and Mexico is trying to reclaim the Apache territory.

And they go up there for 50 or 100 years.

They can't stop the Apache either.

So they just give up and they secede the territory.

Now the U.S.

is progressing west.

And the U.S.

starts bumping into the Apache.

Again, 50 to 100 years, they can't stop them either.

They're getting so frustrated.

And what ultimately took down the Apache, and this is sort of like a... I want to caveat this.

This isn't like the established historical narrative.

If you read a textbook on the Apache, they give you all these different reasons and how they ultimately fell.

But the takeaway here, which at least some people believe, is that the U.S.,

said, okay, we can't fight them head on.

Instead, we're going to try to subvert them from the inside.

So they gave the Apache leaders who are only, they're not like, they don't have power in the leadership.

It's like strong warrior wants to go fight and people follow them.

It's sort of like that.
