Kinfolk Tech is an organization that focuses on how do we remember?
And what are the monuments and the legacies of mostly Black, Latino, Indigenous, and queer history that are often forgotten?
About a few months ago, Idris worked and Confotech put out a piece in collaboration with the James Baldwin family.
We were celebrating 100 years of James Baldwin's work and his deep reflection.
And they put together an AI-organized typewriter, and it was right here at the Brooklyn Museum, that you could come into the museum and you could say, I don't know what the purpose of my life is.
James, help me to figure it out.
And this typewriter would then produce some of his seminal works and words, but it was using an AI and a database of James's work, some published, some unpublished, but it was done in concert with the Baldwin family.
And it was such a great example of art and AI and remembrance and honoring culture that
It wasn't a James Baldwin bot.
But it was using AI to be responsive to the prompt that you would put into the typewriter.
And it was this interactive moment and they won a number of awards and were featured in the New York Times about it.
But what I love about Idris and the team at Kinfolk is it is engineers, it is writers, it is philosophers, it is creative visual artists who are saying, at our best, when we think about who is worthy of being remembered.
And how we honor and value the stories that often are not told when we center that and we use technology to augment and to tell those stories.
And now they're doing a virtual reality.
You can look at and point your smartphone at different places and monuments around the city and tell stories that are often not told.
And only technology can create the opportunity to do this at that scale.
You know, one of the things, and many people forget this, libraries at the very beginning were paid to join institutions.
And so you fast forward to where we are now, where you have libraries in every part of the country and there's access points for every person to walk in any day, use the internet and take out books.
