What actually happened is you get little city states and kingdoms all over the Baltic in northern Germany, creating copies of copies of copies of this original coin from Joachimsthal.
All these coins come to be referred to as Jochem's Thaler, coins from Jochem's Thal.
Doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it?

So that gets shortened to Thaler.
And then in Dutch, they also start copying.
Sounds like Weizenthaler.
