Not at all.

I'm afraid the moral judgments he forms are, if you like, extreme.

But I must say, you've only got to read about the actual cases of which he was well aware and all his interlocutors at the time must have been well aware to see that what now sounds exaggerated, I'm afraid, was not.

And equity litigation, particularly about a trust involving

some complications either in the locality or in the family or families, it was to be dreaded.

And unless you were massively wealthy, it was most unlikely there would ever be any value in it.

And hence the macabre joke about the terrible waste when there was anything left from an estate for the beneficiaries.

That is the terrible waste from the lawyer's point of view.

And just as John Dice and John Dice ends up

with what might be called the double underlining of no more money to fart about.

So in reality, massive estates were...

dwindled to fractions of their original size simply by the litigation.

Well, I have...

a very striking recollection of a case which I had, what we joked was the melancholy duty of finishing.

This is in the early 1980s when I was a very junior barrister.

And I was given...

a bit like a venerable relic, one of those vertically folded Philzcap bundles of paper tied up with red tape, pink ribbon, and with the handwritten endorsements of my predecessors in the brief going back to the late 1930s.

And it was with a kind of mock ceremony that I was told that I may be the unfortunate young councillor who will actually bring this marvellous case to an end, which I did in what can only be described as an extremely understated way.

Everybody tried to restrain facetious comments, not completely successfully.
