Before we go to break, there's one more story that's been unfolding this past week that we'd like to talk about, and it directly involves Wired in a good way.
Last week, Wired reporters Dhruv Mehrotra and Del Cameron reported that Meta quietly embedded an unreleased facial recognition system into the Meta AI app, which is installed in over 50 million devices and is what you use to control Meta Ray-Ban and other smart classes with Meta AI.
They never publicly activated it, but they also never disclosed it.
Druvendale found it by looking at the code in the app.
We called Meta AI, and that's when they confirmed that this code had been discreetly added over multiple updates this year.
We'll get into more details about how it works, but here's the thing.
One day after we published this piece, Meta deleted nearly all the code from the app.
They won't say why.
