But there are signs that robotics have made big strides in the meantime.

In fact, this April, a robot named Lightning ran a half marathon in 50 minutes and 26 seconds.

That beat the world record set by a human.

So will the robots set new records at this weekend's games, or do they still need a few extra screws and upgrades?

For more on this, I'm joined now from Beijing by NBC News correspondent Janice Mackey Freyer.

Hey Janice.

So Janice, this is just the second year of the World Humanoid Robot Games.

Can you explain that title and and why this competition was started?

And so to be clear, this is not just Chinese robots competing in Chinese games.

There are teams from all over the world that are competing in this.

What does that kind of tell you about the competitive landscape internationally in the robotics race?

And then as far as the social media aspect of this, there have been so many videos floating around ahead of these games in China of some of these robots.

They're on these tracks.

They're they're they're just absolutely gunning it.

They seem to be going very fast.

And then they just can't seem to cross the finish line without exploding or or crashing or running into something.

The metaphor almost writes itself.
