Then I spot my only chance.

At the end of each swing, my body is carried under an overhanging rock out of August's sight.

I get my own knife out, and each time I pass under the rock, I take a whack at the rope.

I swing under the rock again and cut the last strand.

I fall to the edge of the ledge and hang on.
