It's as if we've taken every dimension in which music can exist and tried to expand it and say, what would happen at the edges now?

Let's make a new edge.

Well, you're right in your previous question, you asked did I feel any responsibility for that?

And I do, actually.

Um I mean I was very excited about the idea of generative music.

I invented the phrase, I believe.

Um and I was very excited by the idea of making a music like a seed.

You know, a seed is something that has a genetic message in it, and every manifestation of it will be a little bit different depending on where you plant it and what time of year it grew and so on and so on.

So I thought, wouldn't it be nice if you had music like that?

So I mean there's a a very simple example of that.

Windchimes.

A windchime is a simple enough machine.

Let's say you've got five

Chimes.

Um, each one is a particular pitch.

It's not going to change, it's only that pitch.

But how and when they strike depends on the wind.

So it's sort of semi-random.

So you can't really say that you composed that particular performance, though you can say that I built the system from which that performance emanated.
