The city had also seen violence over religion.
During june nineteen oh nine, there were riots that approached the level of a sectarian civil war after a Protestant counter demonstration to a Catholic procession near Scotland Road.
There were several days of fighting.
People were forced to leave their homes.
The Times of London bemoaned how the Roman Catholics have driven the Protestants from the Scotland Road area, the Protestants have swept Netherfield Road clean of Roman Catholics.

Outside of these sectarian clashes between Catholic and Protestant in nineteen oh nine, there were riots during nineteen eleven when the city was frozen by a huge transport strike.
Strike which socialists in Liverpool hoped would see the overcoming of sectarian division.
During this strike the British Army shot dead, two workmen and a Royal Navy gunboat was stationed on the Mersey.
In 1915, after the sinking of the Lusitania, there were anti-German riots in the city.
Followed by much looting.
Many of those under Lusitania had been natives of Merseyside.
