This is not only Ireland's fight, but a fight for all humanity.
So there was a general expression of solidarity in much of the publicity about the strike.
Commentators again observed how a novel feature was the presence of numerous African American women who endeavored to lure African American longshore men away from work.
Order was maintained in the early days on the New York piers, but elsewhere it was reported numerous encounters between blacks and whites over blacks replacing white longshore men have taken place.
It was traditional that black workers would be used during strikes as strike breakers, and this added to the already intense distrust and racism among Dockland workers.

Indeed, one veteran suggested in later years that Ryan led second generation Irish Americans across picket lines, which most Irish born men were honoring.
Ryan's Union was notable for its lack of militancy.
