Scotland, of course, was also a centre for orange activity.
The British Conservative and Unionist Party had rallied elite opinion against home rule.
leading business and aristocratic figures had funded the Ulster volunteers.
Indeed, the Tories were prepared to back armed revolts in order to destroy the Liberal government.
Up to a million people had attended anti home rule events between nineteen twelve and nineteen fourteen in Britain.
And by nineteen twenty or nineteen twenty one, many of those people were still as hostile to the idea of any form of self determination for Ireland.
It was in the winter of nineteen twenty that the IRA began to carry out attacks in Britain itself.
Until that point their main role had been as backup to the forces in Ireland.
But they had decided by late nineteen twenty to bring some pressure to bear on Britain through operations in England, Scotland and Wales.
On the twenty seventh of november nineteen twenty, the IRA carried out a series of arson attacks along the Liverpool waterfront.
This was part of a wider strategy of sabotage and economic destruction in Britain, in retaliation for Crown Forces destruction in Ireland.
We are doing this because you are doing it in Ireland, one Manchester IRA man said during an arson attack in the city in nineteen twenty one.
The IRA in general saw their English volunteers as the auxiliaries of their attacking forces.
In other words, their operations were backup for the activities in Ireland.
But as the conflict in Ireland deepened.
and became worse, then more and more activities were carried out in Britain itself.
By july nineteen twenty one, the British police suspected IRA involvement in two hundred and thirty five incidents.
The majority of these took place in Lancashire and in London.
