So in December nineteen sixty nine, the IRA holds General Army Convention, which is its decision making body.

And splits, a group break away and describe themselves as the provisional army council of the IRA.

Provisional means that the title is is supposed to be temporary, but it's what they're called for the next thirty years.

Those who remain then are called the official IRA.

And the provisionals and the officials are the two organizations that emerge from this split.

Then a month later there's a Sinn Fein Ordesh, and you've got a lot of the same people involved.

The leaderships are basically interchangeable, and Sinn Fein also then splits as well.

So this makes the split very, very public.

It was already known that there'd been a split.

Now

The split is over politics.

It's over a whole range of ideas.

Should Republicans take seats in Leinster House if elected?

The provisionals say no, that the Republican policy since 1922 has been to refuse to recognize the free state, and this is the road to betrayal.

There are then also questions about the politics.

Had the Republican movement become too left-wing, was it actually too influenced by communists?
