you know, to undermine a left wing force in the south, but which is also concerned about then a conservative I IRA in in Northern Ireland itself.

And a lot of people would think there was, you know

elements of truth in that because the Dublin government is rocked by a series of of crises in nineteen sixty nine, nineteen seventy about events in the North, which add a lot of fuel to the the fire of of these ideas.

At one level, the view of a government plot to split the IRA because they feel threatened by the left is is easily dismissed.

And a big chunk of of media and popular opinion, particularly

Those which were hostile to the Workers' Party would have said, This was essentially nonsense to explain your own failure.

I mean, by the by the late nineteen seventies, when people think about the IRA, they think about the province.

Yeah.

And the officials are marginalized to a great extent, particularly in in nationalist theories of Northern Ireland.

And even their political wing, which does start to make some gains in the South, is very small.

You know, at its highest point, it has seven TDs.

And therefore, people who dismiss

the idea of a con of a conspiracy in nineteen sixty nine which said, These people have to explain their own failure.

They refused to accept that actually lots of ordinary nationalists wanted to support the provisional IRA, that the provisional IRA offered defence, which the officials were in in theory unwilling to do.

And that actually lots of ordinary nationalists wanted to fight.

And basically because they're your mortal enemies, you've decided to delegitimize them by saying they're the creation of these, you know, bogeymen in in in the Dublin government.

And

That you know, certainly

By the nineteen nineties, you know, I think a lot of public opinion would have and and popular

academic and and media opinion would be quite dismissive of of that idea.
