It's just like with backtesting.
Backtesting has tremendous value done correctly.
Where some traders hurt themselves without realizing it is when they want to do the backtesting, they say, yeah, I don't want to just take the strategy to market and start trading with real money.
I want to backtest it in historical data.
Make sure that it worked yesterday, so to speak, before I expect it to work today.
Good thinking.
That is prudent.
Now, the thing is, when it comes to testing and sampling, this is huge because what a lot of traders will do is they'll want to take one strategy and use it all the time.
And every day, it doesn't matter what's going on in the markets.
And that's not necessarily a good idea because strategies have a premise, whatever it is.
And generally, the premise is going to be based on
a trending market, a flat market, a counter trending market where it's volatile, but not necessarily going one direction.
So you have different market conditions and most strategies will perform well in one, maybe two, but rarely all three.
And so part of the backtesting is you have to look at your strategy so that when you get the results back, you understand what the numbers are telling you.
So some traders, they're like, oh, and we don't want to backtest it over the last 10 years.
And there's merit to that.
That's like, okay, that gives you
trading in all conditions over a long period of time the downfall of that and where that hurts traders is you see how it trades over time and during the favorable conditions but you're not seeing the insights on how it trades specifically in the poor conditions and if you do that and you say well yeah you know i can have these expectations i mean because part of the part of the point of testing is to set our expectations so that we know what to expect when we go live with the strategy
Well, if you do this 10 year test and it comes back and it's really robust, the numbers look good, but that strategy performs very poorly under the wrong conditions, you can get crushed.
You can be sitting there trading and you hit the wrong conditions, but it's been working fine and now it's doing real poorly and you're sitting there saying, wait a minute, my back test results were not like this, what's going on?
