Relative to how much money I had, it was very expensive, yes.
But back at that time, the surf magazines didn't want money up front.
So I was able to get 30 to 60 days to pay the advertising bill.
So I was totally gambling money.
That if I ran these ads, I would get enough sales to be able to pay for the ads.
I got it.
I did β probably the smartest thing I ever did in that business was β
I did a search, a trademark search, that it cost me $600 at the time, which today is probably $4,000 or $5,000, you know?
And I did a search of the world, especially the U.S., to see if there'd been any prior use of the trade name UGG, and they had not.
So that opened up the gate for me to do the registration of the trademark.
Yes.
That's right.
Oh, nobody had heard of it, yeah.
Yeah, still using my own capital, yes.
Yeah, my dad said,
Who'd been a contractor, you know, absolutely did not want to be running my own business.
And I think it's probably because he had such a hard time with it.
That's why I got into accounting.
He wanted a safe, secure job, you know, work your way up to chief accountant.
You know, I couldn't think of it.
