So but the thing that inspired this is, you know, many of us here are old enough to remember a time when there were these endless gushing articles about string theory in the press.
Right.
It was like it seems every time you'd look in the science section of The Times or something like that, there'd be some like the physics of the future today is here type article about how it's going to solve all these problems.
And these days you really don't see too much about it.
So I thought it might be interesting to talk about for someone who's kind of inside it and still somewhat, you know, I still have a lot of friends working on it.
Is that the vibe inside the field?
Is there even still a field to talk about or what?
For context, first of all, let me just very briefly summarize what string theory is.
String theory is, you can summarize string theory very, very quickly.
It basically is the idea that instead of the universe being fundamentally composed of point particles, what we would say are zero-dimensional things, they have no spatial extent, the fundamental things in the universe have some spatial extent.
They're one-dimensional strings.
That's the idea with string theory.
What if when you zoomed in on something really, really, really close, you saw that it actually had some spatial extent to it?
