We've never observed them.
And extraspatial dimensions.
Consistent string theories require one time in nine space dimensions.
All right.
Yeah.
Well, so this is the question, is you might just see that and be like, nope, that's
the question you have to, you can wave these both away with different explanations.
One is supersymmetry definitely does not exist in our universe, but maybe it existed in the early universe and physics parlance was broken.
So there's some remnants of it, which are very heavy particles we haven't seen yet, but they don't exist in our low energy lives.
You could have supersymmetry in the early universe, things very hot, very energetic that didn't persist to the present day.
That's something people have studied extensively.
that is something people had hoped to see at the LHC.
With the extra dimensions, you can say, well, obviously there aren't nine large dimensions, right?
We would know that.
We live in a universe, as far as we can tell, is one time in three space dimensions.
What if the extra six dimensions were very small and curled up into a shape that, again, we can't see in our kind of macroscopic everyday lives, but there are some vestiges of this if you could explore very, very small distances.
So another way of saying this is that the potential to reconcile quantum mechanics and gravity is it's such a hard problem to solve that maybe you're willing to put up with some difficult things to put up with and then see if you can get around them somehow.
For a while in the, let's see, late 80s, people, some physicists really went overboard with the string theory hype.
And there was a hope that we would write down like a central equation for string theory and we just follow our noses and we would end up with a universe that had one time, three space dimensions with the particles and forces that we see.
You know, all the stuff would just kind of follow from a straight line.
