some of that has already been determined at quite a young age.
I mean, I love Hatterley's book and it was an inspiration to me when I read it many years ago.
And I gave a speech yesterday, 50 years on from Jim Callaghan's speech at Ruskin on education.
I gave a 50 years on speech about that.
And the theme, a big part of the theme yesterday was around education as freedom.
So the freedom to give people choices over their lives.
And the argument I was making was that that has to start early on because it's in those first early years of a child's life that so much will be determined unless we take action.
And why I was making the argument for a big expansion in childcare, universal childcare, so that every child, no matter their background, starts school in the best possible position.
Because now, you know, less well-off children arrive months behind their more affluent peers.
That gap widens.
And then many of those young people, as Alan Milburn's report has shown,
end up not in education, employment or training.
So it's the absence of choice those young people will have later on because of decisions that were or weren't taken when they were much younger.
It's the best job in government.
I mean, I was, like so many of us, entirely new to government.
I think we've actually been able to drive things forward pretty fast.
If you're clear about what you want to do, I've just been struck by how amazing so many civil servants are.
If you've got a clear agenda, you know what you want to deliver, it will deliver for you.
My experience at the Department for Education...
is that the team there are just so committed, so dedicated.
