If you play a tight range, you defend a tight range pre in the big blind and you flop top pair and you're only 20 big blinds to start, you lose, you're out if you beat.

If you flop top pair, your hand isn't necessarily as worthwhile to stack off with.
And that's a problem if you're facing a covering stack and they're incentivized to put you to the test for all your chips because they know that the chips mean more to you than they do to them.
So that's why you don't defend these hands.
But once you do defend and you're playing a strongest range...
At that point, you need to be willing you may bust.
