And there's a lot of he's struggling with his own demons as he kind of goes through this process.

So he's a very he's an interesting character himself.

And then there's lots of nice French touches, of course.

You know, you get this sense of Paris or France at that time.

It's maybe the 30s or the 50s, that sort of period.

And food is everywhere.

there's everything stops for lunch he phones home almost every day to find out what his wife and then if he doesn't fancy it he says well i'll have lunch in the local bistro so there's a lot it's so it's it's very it's very french although although simeon was uh belgian by birth yeah okay so what would be a good one for people to start with well you could start with my friend meg ray um the very first one was i think pete the leviathan the latvian and like i say 75 of them you don't have to dip in and you don't need to read them in sequence yeah okay

It's a great read.

I was in Charlie Byrne's bookshop in Galway earlier in the year and I saw it and I said, I'm going to get this and I'm going to read it because Peter Murta retired from the Irish Times where he, for many years, he served as a journalist, worked previously for The Guardian.

And he's obviously an enthusiastic motorcyclist.

And I think he had done some previous trips along the Camino and that sort of thing.

But anyway, he decided to celebrate his retirement.

He would take his motorbike to South America and he would start at the very bottom of South America.

and travel all the way up through South Central America into North America up through Canada and he'd end up at the top of Alaska as far as you can go so it's from tip to top I love travel books anyway but I suppose this particularly hits the sweet spot with me because it's we're about the same age and I've recently retired he has recently retired and there's a great tribute to to everyone who you know reaches that stage of life and says well actually I'm not going to sit at home you know looking at the wall I'm going to get out and do things going to fulfill my ambitions and Peter writes very well you know there's the actual journey there's so much cost

What I particularly love about it is he's great for meeting people and talking to people and finding out about their stories.

And he has that reporter's eye for a great story.

And it's full of wonderful characters that he meets along the way, as well as his various adventures, getting the motorbike from A to B, sometimes on dirt tracks over mountain passes, and eventually gets to the United States.

And there's a kind of a relief there because he's back in the first world, if you like, and he can get a hot shower and a meal and a good hotel.

So then he has this kind of, you know, other take on the United States.

So, yeah, tip to top.
