So it's the very end of what was left of the Roman Empire and then the emergence of these states.

So you see that France beginning to emerge as a state, Germany, Italy.

You know, Britain, all of these beginning to take the form that is recognisable today out of all this chaos and violence.

So this will be one of his very early novels.

I think maybe it's his second published novel.

And how this came about was earlier this year, I was asked to conduct an interview with Sebastian Barry at a book festival in Granard in County Longford.

And Belinda McKeown and a number of others organized this annual book fair.

And they had invited Sebastian Barry and they invited me to interview him.

So in preparation for this, I reread.

I would have read quite a few of his books over the years.

I reread and I discovered this, which I'd never heard of.

It's, say, one of his early novels.

And it concerns a young boy growing up in Sligo in the early in the 1900s.

doing what kids do, you know, in a town and finding out about the world.

He goes off to sea.

He comes back.

It's the early 20s.
