I was in Detroit.
I never heard my mother and grandmother howl so loudly and the pain was just, it traveled throughout the neighborhood.
Like it was really impactful to see what happened.
The moment they murdered him, the military took over my neighborhood.
The moment they murdered him.
And it changed my perspective forever.
At that moment, I felt like a child of war.
I felt like my childhood had been taken.
My innocence had been taken.
Why would you murder this man?
Why does America have a problem with me?
Or my family?
Or the people I love?
So that's why I took that journey to get to know her.
And I'm making a movie about her point of view and what happened in her life with Martin.
So important for the world to see.
But my mother and I just, my mom decided to take me with her to LA for a two week vacation in summer of 68.
We came out, very lean years, slept on a lot of floors, sofas, and spare bedrooms, and with friends and relatives.
Finally got on our feet, and my mom ended up going to UCLA and getting her master's degree in cinema TV production.
And because she got her master's degree, and I was fortunate to have a mother not only beautiful but brilliant, she was able to knock on a number of doors throughout Hollywood to try and get a job, and she got a lot of no's.
