And that is a big part of it.

It's quite disgusting, the things he does in that regard.

But it's the coercive control element that's really present.

And I think that that's something she does well in this context...

in that she uses the device of the different storylines to show the contrast between that playing out in the Gordon timeline, but you still get a sense of the effects of that in the other stories.

For example, Julian is growing up in Ireland, living with his grandmother, and he and Maya are both kind of still dealing with the trauma of the deaths of their mother and their father being incarcerated in this way.

I think the other Shakespeare line that's probably a good and obvious one to call out is kind of the Romeo and Juliet quote, right?

Of a rose by any other name would still smell as sweet.

And that really is the one that I think Knapp is kind of critiquing here when she plays with this story is this idea of almost an essential self versus that determinism that comes with a name, right?

And it's something that she kind of calls out a little bit more directly in the text as well, is there's a scene where Bear is talking to Maya, and they're talking about the Canterbury Tales, which he and his teacher have been reading in class.

And he says that the teacher asks them a question, which is, if you were to title your life based on it in relation to someone else, what would that title be?

And Maya immediately comes back with The Murderer's Daughter.

Mm-hmm.

And so the whole way through this story, there's kind of, absolutely, it sounds like a great read.

And to be fair, that was my favorite timeline for sure.

But I think that all of these mechanisms are kind of a way of us picking apart questions of like nature versus nurture.

But then also, you know, the effects of trauma and the effects that a single person has, not just on their direct family, but all those other kind of side characters who you mentioned before as well.
