Cardinal Timothy Dolan

In a statement, Cardinal Timothy Dolan says, "...the sexual abuse of minors long ago has brought shame upon our church.

I once again ask forgiveness for the failing of those who betrayed the trust placed in them, by failing to provide for the safety of our young people."

In order to pay for the settlements, Dolan wrote that the Archdiocese has laid off staff, reduced its operating budget by 10%, and is working to finalize the sale of real estate.

The Cardinal also says that both sides have agreed to use the same mediator who negotiated a settlement between the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and more than 1,000 victims.
