So sticking with how we perceive trust based just on a stranger's face, what are we looking for that signals trust?
What about differences between men and women and what we perceive as trustworthy in a male versus female face?
I do want to ask about cross-cultural studies when it comes to this space.
I mean, are these predominantly drawing on kind of Western or Anglo countries?
And are there any differences between cultures and what we perceive as trustworthy or untrustworthy in a face?
And do we know just how important the face is in this processing as well?
Many of the studies Dr Sutherland mentioned there focus on flashing images of people's faces and then asking participants to assess their trustworthiness.
But of course, when we glimpse a stranger, we see more than just a picture of their face.
Dr. Nicole Nelson is a lecturer in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland.
She studies how other visual cues, like someone's posture or body movement, affect trait judgments.
Recently, she's also been examining the role of things that can obscure the face, like beards.
And there might be some important lessons here for other objects, like face masks.
And what about other visual cues that we're picking up by looking at someone?
I believe you've got some work under review about posture, for example, and its effects on perceived trust.
Like what?
Give me an example of what might be considered trustworthy posture and not so trustworthy posture.
But I imagine there are some other things in the mix there as well.
And one that sticks out to me is movement.
So give me a sense of how movement as a kind of subcategory of nonverbal communication can impact whether we trust someone or not.
And then, of course, there's the actual location that you're seeing this person.
