And so not only is the book not as good, but it's a harder sell.

As a product of Catholic grade school, high school, and college, I'll go for it.

The way in which he loses his initial faith early on is that he kind of gets bored by it.
He says Christianity felt too wishy-washy.
He became an atheist later in the military and in college and certainly at aggressively secular Yale.
But he really says that when he comes home from Iraq in 2006, he was no longer a Christian, right?
And so what's interesting to me is that what draws him to Catholicism is not any kind of dark night of the soul, not some big transformational experience, though he does mention some moments.
But it's really kind of the intellectual core of the faith.
You know, he thinks and reasons his way to faith.
He's asking himself the big questions.
Why does an all-powerful and loving God create a world with so much suffering in it?
He thinks of his own upbringing
where he says he suffered the mortal sin of despair, right?
And he finds some solace in Catholic thought and theology on this, right?
